Jagannath Kunte's book that too for ₹30! Isn't it insulting for an author and loss for the publishers?', 'How can people give away such a wonderful book? At least they could have sold it second hand, given it to some library or just given it away to some reader.' If like many other readers, your head is buzzing with such questions, it's no surprise. Many years back, even I was thinking on these lines. Then something happened which changed my perspective.</div><div><br /></div><div>Some time in 2010, while cleaning a cupboard, I found what seemed to be an old diary. Wrapped in multiple layers of polythene bags, I knew this had something to do with my grandfather as he was very particular about using and storing things carefully. It was his diary.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGKsKCpKkhRlIctZb44JIKM1-y5ce8Lzmd9clA_Ejv_SB75osRDHJd4SQD6varBE6_ObeU8SameXHVV0FWS2UfbImEiajKf1XG2i9m6fX_9SSdanqUzMvC00SpqFBiZBQQ7seAHco9UhQdlvGpzoAHi3igmfytxdMIImml6BcH5mnW1iXuEeDQmZoDYMw/s3096/20240215_121717%20ed%20blur.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3096" data-original-width="2322" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGKsKCpKkhRlIctZb44JIKM1-y5ce8Lzmd9clA_Ejv_SB75osRDHJd4SQD6varBE6_ObeU8SameXHVV0FWS2UfbImEiajKf1XG2i9m6fX_9SSdanqUzMvC00SpqFBiZBQQ7seAHco9UhQdlvGpzoAHi3igmfytxdMIImml6BcH5mnW1iXuEeDQmZoDYMw/w300-h400/20240215_121717%20ed%20blur.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>While studying for my bachelors, I used to visit some nearby old paper marts and second-hand book shops for reference books. It was then that I found the real treasure these shops were preserving. Behind the in-demand academic reference books stacked at the entrance were hundreds of books ignored by many. You name the subject or the author and there is high possibility of finding a particular book. I was thrilled to find old copies of National Geographic magazine, which stopped newsstand sale from 2024, as low as ₹30-₹50! No, I'm not referring to pirated copies that arrived much later on the streets. One could also find really old works of highly acclaimed national and international authors.</div><div><br /></div><div>The shop owner and his family usually stayed in the back end of the shop with his wife and children often assisting him. While the salesman had escaped formal education, his knowledge of authors and diverse subjects was surprising. Unlike the modern day bookshops-cum-cafes, he didn't have to bother about cozy interiors or customer relations. The shop had organically become a community centre which catered to people from diverse backgrounds, age groups, intellectual and emotional needs. I would often see school kids frequenting the shop for comic books and a grandma visiting it to buy her monthly magazines.</div><div><br /></div><div>I couldn't stop myself from describing one such shop in my debut novella, <a href="https://amzn.to/3PBMaUF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Last Nomad</a>. These book shops are museums of memories. Hundreds of books and periodicals used by many generations lie there waiting to meet their new readers. You can read handwritten notes in the margins and instantly know something about the previous readers. You can sometimes find letters tucked in some books. The title page often reveals the occasion on which the book was purchased and whether it was a gift on some special occasion. Many old books from school and college libraries also find its way to these old book shops.</div><div><br /></div><div>While reading my grandfather's diary, I realized how we have little or no value for access to information and knowledge resources thanks to omnipresent technology. Thus, these book shops are not only a source of livelihood for the seller and his family, but they make access to knowledge affordable. Imagine reading Rabindranath, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, P.L.Deshpande, R.K.Narayan or Aravind Adiga only for ₹50! As books lying on our shelves and libraries become old and their end seems near, these book sellers revive and grant them a new life.</div><div><br /></div><div>Do you have any memories about these books and shops? I would like to read your experience in the comments section.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad <br /><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>

स्वाती प्रभू</div><div>drswatiprabhu@gmail.com</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>

If we decide, we can find flaws in the best of works. However, despite the recent flak from audience, Om Raut's Prabhas and Kriti Sanon starrer Adipurush is soaring high at the Box Office.</div><div><br /></div><div>After seeing the grand trailer, I was shocked to see the audience reaction on the day of release. Calling it names over the dialogues, VFX and casting, many viewers gave negative reviews. After personally watching a show, I am sharing my perspective with you.</div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">1. Don't watch Adipurush if...</h3><div><br /></div><div>If are going to the theatre with the expectation of watching a remake of Ramanand Sagar's or B.R.Chopra's televised Ramayan, don't book your tickets. Cinema is an evolving medium. The visual, literary and musical language of cinema has to match the expectations of its audience to be commercially successful. However, every director creates a film with a certain cinematic vision and Adipurush definitely has one. It is grand in its cinematic language and music definitely has contributed its share. In fact, the young audience in the theatre, including children were enjoying it well.</div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">2. Is Adipurush VFX substandard?</h3><div>Prasad Sutar, the man behind 'Adipurush' VFX, is known for giving films like Don 2, Bajirao Mastani, Tanhaji and has also won a Filmfare Award for Best Visual Effects for Tanhaji. The VFX is definitely realistic.</div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">3. Are Adipurush dialogues really cringe?</h3><div>After being trolled for its seemingly cringe dialogues like 'Lanka laga denge' the viewers seems to have missed some finer aspects of cinema. Ramayana is a 'itihasa' that is not 'mythology' as losely termed, but 'history'. It has several different versions which are prominently folk narrations. Some say there are as many as 300 versions. Expect for a handful of dialogues which can be termed 'colloquial', a major portion of the narration is written in standard Hindi cinema language. And to avoid further lash from puritans, these 5 dialogues are being changed as announced on 18 June 2023.</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, let's not forget that it is a movie whose primary objective is entertainment. Has Adipurush let down the epic in any way? Not really. Instead this cinema has brought forth the relevance of our itihasa in a grand cinematic language once again and encouraged the viewers to read and understand Ramayan on their own.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad <br /><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>

Yes, for facts are supported by physical manifestations and statistics. But what if you are presented with a narrative resembling factual truth yet the author decides to call it fiction? What will you call it? What purpose does such a piece of literature serve? I can only think of it as a mad man's rambling. And the present world needs more such unorthodox individuals and their stunning works which challenge our stereotypical thoughts. Alas! We have lost Valentino (December 31, 2021).</div><div><br /></div><div>Valentino's Facebook Intro was perhaps his more apt description.</div><div>'... Old man who lost the wings of his feet.</div><div>So he's flying with his Heart and Soul' it reads.</div><div><br /></div><div>From my personal interaction I know that he also enjoyed his roles as a playright, sculptor, teacher, antiques restorer, entrepreneur, artist and adventurer. His spirit of curiosity is abundantly sprinkled across the book. </div><div><br /></div><div>Rightly termed as 'fairy tales for adults' by Radha Gopalan in her review, this book is labyrinth with pathways to many aspects on which the core of human societies rest and for which they have been always seeking guidance. Has Valentino got the facts right? Does that make this work a science-fiction? As our understanding evolves, facts are subject to change. Where does that lead us? Does it mean that all the scientific and technological advances are standing on a hollow ground? </div><div><br /></div><div>This piece of work is a guide in disguise to show us how far we have distanced ourselves from experiencing and responding to life and instead, are surviving in the safe cocoon of thoughts. Until the climax, does Valentino show a way out? Is he trying to act a messiah or is he another doomsayer in the making? That we could have found out in Part 2 of the series but before it could manifest, his creator rushed to lead Valentino into the future, to a land where all of us must travel some day and with it, another solution to perpetual conflict between human beings and nature is now hiding in the maze of time. Are you ready to discover it on your own?</div></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad <br /><a href="https://amzn.to/3yGp31Y" target="_blank">Have you read 'The Last Nomad'?</a><div><br /></div>The Last Nomadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181169692317799267noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1291307606780865284.post-26205439475135963522022-08-02T13:34:00.003+05:302022-08-02T13:34:24.891+05:30Short story 'Straight Lines' selected among the Top 22 for the Notion Press Fiction Collective!<div><div>A Big Thanks for all the support for my story, Straight Lines.❤️</div><div><br /></div><div>It has been selected among the Top 22 stories in the Notion Press National Writing Competition 2022! Not able to find a new one after struggling for weeks, she returns to her native place. Always wanting to do something different than a desk job, she thinks day and night about what can be done. With no money or resources at hand, she feels there is no way out. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next day, early morning, she decides to take a walk in the village. She hears farmers complaining about the falling water levels, year after year, and paucity of water for the crops. Due to less yield many of them have migrated to the towns for temporary jobs. She sees the thinning forest at the village periphery and murmuring streams which, few years ago, used to be gushing through the trees.</div><div><br /></div><div>At night, as she is lying under the pitch black sky, she notices the turmoil within. Unable to sleep, she watches the barren farmland and makes a plan. For the next two days, from dawn till dusk, she digs up the entire land with the help of a labourer and makes bunds for the water to percolate. Night after night, she waits for the rain. And one night, while deep asleep, she is suddenly woken up by the sound of downpour and lightning. The next day, she plants saplings to turn the barren field into a small forest. And that year, the ground water levels went up, making available more water, not only for her but also for the neighbours. In the following summer, she sees a variety of birds perching on the trees, which have now grown several feet in height. Enjoying the fruits, they scatter seeds throughout the village through their droppings. </div><div><br /></div><div>With one simple act of giving back to the earth, she was able to transform everything around her. And it all began in her barren land.</div></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad <br /><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>

One such concept, very much prevalent in many cultures (Hindu, Jain and Buddhist), is Brahmacharya, which is loosely (and incompletely) translated as celibacy.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Vicious Cycle (दुष्टचक्र - Marathi Edition) explores the concept of Brahmacharya through the diverse perspectives of Sexology and Ayurveda. With the rise of popular media channels and independent content creators, misconceptions about health and sex education are rampant. With no guidance from individuals who have dedicated their lives to building science exploring health and wellbeing, youth often fall into the trap of believing and following popular notions which turn out detrimental to their health. </div><div><br /></div><div>So, what's the way out? Start at the place where you are. Do not believe but observe, study, and practise. And this is what author Mandar Walimbe's book will help you chart out. What's reassuring for readers is the author's rational approach to the subject rather than a position of morality or authority. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><div align="left"><p dir="ltr">*Get your paperback/Kindle copy*<br />

One day, Mr.Alpha had a wonderful idea while swimming at the beach. If he could carry back few pails of water and sand, he could build his personal beach, right outside his house. Mr. Beta, soaking in the sun, was watching this with great curiousity.</div><div><br /></div><div>Mr. Alpha arrived with a handcart which had a shovel and few pails. Introduction to Archaeology, was first published under the 'History of Man' series by the Department of Archaeology, University of Poona and the Deccan College in 1965. </div><div><br /></div><div>Covering multiple aspects related to human civilization, through the lens of archaeology, the book gets straight to the heart of the subject without much dependence on technical jargon. The view that Archaeology lies at the convergence of humanities and sciences (natural and applied) is very well demonstrated.</div><div> </div><div>In fact, one can say that the book is a must read for every person, irrespective of the educational background and age, who is curious to explore the 'story of man' as stated aptly by the author, Prof. Sankalia, a pioneer of Archaeology in India. After reading this book, the way one perceives their surroundings is bound to become more interesting.</div><div><br /></div><div>In a nutshell, the concluding lines of this book reveal the heart of this work painstakingly put together.</div><div>'For the aim is the total picture of man in the past. The master, living few villages away, was known to have mystical powers. He could walk on water, fly above the clouds and even turn into thin air at will. </div><div><br /></div><div>The young monks wanted to become someone special by achieving the state of enlightenment. When they reached the old master's hut on top of the hill, they were tired and frustrated. The road was rocky and the climb too steep. They wondered how the old master would travel up and down everyday. </div><div><br /></div><div>Not wanting to waste more time, they approached the master and told him about their quest. The master replied that as he was to leave on his secret sojourn, they will have to wait for 12 years to learn something from him. One of the monks was irritated on hearing that. He immediately took his baggage and left. As the old master left, the other monk, who was wondering what he should do next, decided to wait at the hill for a couple of days. </div><div><br /></div><div>The monk would do his daily chores, beg for food in the village, and come back at the hill. One day, seeing a lake from the hill, he desired of having the power to walk on water. Three years had passed by but there was no sign of the master's return. Was he really going to take 12 years to return? he wondered and tried to encourage himself to wait there.</div><div><br /></div><div>One day, as he had gone down the hill to fetch some water, the monk saw a couple of village men moving strange wooden objects on the lake. He could not control his curiosity. The village men replied that these objects can be used to move on water. The young monk was thrilled and within a few hours learnt how to use them. </div><div><br /></div><div>When the old master returned after 12 years, he saw that the young monk had dropped his quest to walk on the water surface while the second monk had seen more than 10 masters and was still clueless about how he could walk on water.</div><div><br /></div><div>Many a times, we do not find answers to all our questions. No matter how hard we strive, there seems to be no way out. But as time goes by, it turns out that the question we posed was not ours but simply a distraction. </div><div><br /></div><div>Listen to the audio version: <a href="https://youtu.be/JbGIIysz8L0">https://youtu.be/JbGIIysz8L0</a></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad <br /><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>

And the year 2020 has been a strong revelation of this fact.</div><div><br /></div><div>Few days ago, I started reading the popular book 'Death: An Inside Story' by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, which is an undertaking to explore the realm of death and the various concepts associated with it.</div><div><br /></div><div>A word of caution before you start reading the book: no matter how fantastic, crazy, or tempting it may seem to accept what has been written, it is upto each one of us to discover it for ourselves as the author himself highlights this in the book and elsewhere.</div><div><br /></div><div>The content may come across as highly unsettling and depressing but one must take in as much possible in one reading for the effort to be worthwhile.</div><div><br /></div><div>Some concepts may seem to be in congruence with traditional and popular beliefs in India but the narrative is an exploration of the author's own seeking. </div><div><br /></div><div>The sequence of chapters cover multiple aspects of death: physiological, psychological, logical, and the rest. One must be cautious while treading this line of thought and have ample amount of skepticism. Avoiding this precaution may lead to hallucinations or fears, which are certainly self-created.</div><div><br /></div><div>One striking feature is the way in which the narrative unfolds, sometimes making you forget the demarcation between chapters, somewhat like the blurred boundaries between what we think are life and death.</div></div><div><br /></div>- The Last Nomad<div><br /></div><div> To get your copy of Death: An Inside Story, follow the link: <a href="https://amzn.to/3retxa7">https://amzn.to/3retxa7</a><div><br /></div><a href="https://bit.ly/InsightStories_Store" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Check out books from the Insight Stories webstore.</a>
