What makes a film made on Rs 2 cr budget earn Rs 12 cr, and see 2500% box office jump in its third week that too without any popular mega/superstars in the cast, item songs, sensual content or violence?
Based on author (and director) Vishal Chaturvedi’s book, Divine Detour: That Changed My Life (order on Amazon) Hanuman Ansh is not just another movie but a wave of devotion through a cinematic experience that will leave you more lively and at complete ease.
Never in my distant dream would I have believed anyone a few years back if they would've told me that someone would actually make a movie on Neem Karoli Baba and people would wait till the entire credits rolled before exiting the cinema hall. Watching this movie left me with an experience that is beyond words.
Although I was familiar with Maharaj ji and his anecdotes because of reading and watching interviews of Rama Dass (the American Spiritual leader) and Krishna Dass (popular American vocalist singing Hindu devotional songs), it was only about a couple of instances from his life.
The depth at which the thread of devotion has been portrayed in this cinema is soothing yet profound to say the least. If you don't believe that viewers will watch movies about Bhakti (devotion) without gimmicks, visual or otherwise, then you should certainly watch this one. The cast, sound, screenplay, music all seem to fall in to place possibly because it is made out of love and absolute surrender.
And yes this movie doesn't mention anything about Ram Dass, Krishna Dass, Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. Yet it is a wonderful work. How? You must find that in a theatre.
Only a creation born out of complete devotion can be so beautiful that it lingers long after you've left the cinema hall. Certainly a significant movie in the evolution of Hindi cinema.
